Pat Robinson Calls for Legalization of Medical Marijuana

In possible one of the weirdest turn of events in recent Las Vegas medical marijuana history, Pat Robertson, one of the staunchest conservative, anti-freedom representatives in the country proclaimed that we should decriminalize possession of a small quantity of marijuana.

Nevada medical marijuana clinics were shocked to see the leader of the Christian Coalition make a dramatic change like this and some Las Vegas medical marijuana doctors are still reeling from his revelation. A few weeks ago on Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) television show, Robertson talked about how his experience working in prison ministry, brought him to see small-time offenders being sent away for simple possession, who cost the taxpayers an incredible amount of money.

Mr. Robertson had this to say, “But I just believe criminalizing marijuana, criminalizing the possession of just a few ounces of pot, and that kind of thing, I mean it's costing us a fortune, and it's ruining young people. The young people go into prisons, they go in as youths, and they come out as hardened criminals, and it's not a good thing.”

Obviously, these comments drew a lot of attention from doctors that recommend marijuana in Nevada, who agree with his sentiments. Doctors that recommend marijuana in Las Vegas require that their patients get a medical marijuana card in Nevada before they can receive their medicine.

But, maybe this is a move by Robertson to enhance his presence in liberal circles, by coming out for decriminalizing marijuana he builds himself into the core beliefs of many moderate and left-leaning voters. Las Vegas medical marijuana doctors hope that his remarks are coming from a sincere place and not just trying to garner support, but either way this could be an amazing breakthrough for medical marijuana clinics in Nevada. Doctors that recommend marijuana in Nevada know that the War on Drugs is bad for family values. It will take a lot of good work to make up for the amount of ridiculous and degrading things the Justice Department has done in the name of the “War”. Ending the War on Drugs would be a good way to start this catharsis.

But, as Californians know all too well, even if you gather enough support to legalize marijuana, there are huge swaths of conservative people who will stand up to fight any sort of change. Doctors that recommend marijuana in Nevada see this happen every day, as more people try to stop the Las Vegas medical marijuana movement. But, the endorsement by Pat Robertson will go a long way towards shaking things up with the conservative voters. It may not be enough to change existing drug laws right now, but it shows progress when hardcore, staunch conservatives are leaning towards legalizing Las Vegas medical marijuana.

The time for change is coming and more people see that now. Las Vegas medical marijuana doctors still have a huge fight in front of them, but it’s one that they are more than ready to handle.
